Coconut “Tree of life”

Coconuts are an integral part of Pacific life and provide food, nutrition, shelter, crafts and income for the majority of Pacific communities. The long association of coconut with Pacific peoples has led to a rich diversity of coconuts with over 70 varieties and ecotypes described for just a few countries in the region. There is much work yet to do to document, conserve and utilise the coconut diversity available for exploitation in Pacific Island countries. With the increasing demand for new coconut products, Pacific countries are ideally placed to take advantage of this market if constraints can be overcome. The Land Resources Division has had several projects involving coconut in the past and with donor support continues to advance efforts towards improved and sustainable use of the coconut palm.
