Thursday 16  May 2013, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Suva –

The Biosecurity and Trade team of SPC’s Land Resources Division, in collaboration with CABI (a not-for-profit science-based development and information organisation), facilitated the first multiple user online access to CABIs Crop Protection Compendium via an authenticated site. The primary users are LRD technical staff, and  heads of biosecurity and quarantine departments across the Pacific, as well as agricultural research institutions.

The compendium is the world’s most comprehensive site of crop protection information.  It is both an encyclopaedic reference work and a problem-solving tool. It contains a variety of information sources, including expert datasheets on over 3,000 pests, diseases, natural enemies and crops. The map facility shows the distribution of pests and diseases.

The full context of scientific research is also accessible in the compendium, appearing as conference proceedings, reports and journal articles.  There is also a comprehensive glossary, comprising 21425 technical and scientific terms. In addition, users will also have access to the latest international scientific research through the provision of over 125,000 bibliographic references selected from the CABI abstract database.

All the information can be copied and pasted to produce such things as training handouts and extension literature.  Handy report functions allow you to build tailor-made reports from a long list of data elements – these can then be printed or output as a pdf file.
