Facilitating Agricultural Commodity Trade

The European Union-funded Facilitating Agricultural Commodity Trade (FACT) pilot project aims to support commercial ventures and producer groups in becoming export-oriented, market-driven enterprises that will consistently supply overseas markets with competitive agricultural and forestry products. The project is implemented by the Land Resources Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) in Suva, Fiji and started in May 2008.

Wednesday, 16 June 2010 11:10

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) will award five individuals for outstanding achievements in different categories that support the development and export of Pacific Islands agricultural and forestry products.

This award is organised by SPC’s Land Resources Division under its Facilitating Agriculture Commodity Trade (FACT) project, which is funded by the European Union under the 9th European Development Fund.

The awards provide an ideal platform to the individual involved in agriculture and forestry to be recognised for their creativity and hard work, and are designed to help recognise outstanding achievers in the region and to highlight the work of the FACT project.

Winners will be rewarded with specially designed certificates accompanied by a cash price of EUR 500. They will also have the right to print ‘Winner of SPC FACT Award 2010’ on their products for one year as a marketing tool.

The closing date for all nominations is 31 July 2010, and the five different categories are:

  • SPC-LRD FACT Woman in Agricultural Export Business Award – a Pacific woman recognised for her contribution to agricultural or agroforestry exports from the Pacific Islands
  • SPC-LRD FACT Value-added Timber Exporter Award – a Pacific person selected for his/her efforts to develop new value-added timber products for export
  • SPC-LRD FACT Agroforestry Exporter Award – a Pacific person selected for his/her efforts to develop agroforestry plantings, systems and products for export
  • SPC-LRD FACT New Exporter Award – a Pacific person selected for developing an outstanding new agricultural export business or new product/market
  • SPC-LRD FACT Pacific Farmer Award – a Pacific person selected for consistently supplying high-quality produce for export.

The selection criteria for the winners are:

  • Nominees must have resided for at least five years within one of the 14 Pacific members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) (i.e. Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu).
  • Nominees should have made an outstanding contribution to the trade of agricultural and forestry products from one or more of the 14 Pacific ACP countries.
  • All nomination forms must be fully and accurately completed.
  • Submitted information will be treated with strictest confidentiality.
  • Joint awards can be made if two or more people are clearly working together on a given initiative, or if two parties are deemed equally outstanding within a given category.
  • Judges’ decisions in selecting the winners will be final.

The FACT pilot project aims to assist selected commercial ventures and producer groups in export-oriented, market-driven enterprises that will consistently supply overseas markets with competitive agricultural and forestry products.

FACT’s activities are governed by a technical advisory group (TAG) comprising five experts from the private sector, University of the South Pacific, and Pacific Islands Trade and Investment Commission.

Based on commercial and other relevant social and environmental criteria, the TAG selected 17 Pacific Island enterprises and products from more than 80 enterprises that responded to a widely distributed expression of interest in 2008.

Forms of assistance include technical advice, training, and identifying and upgrading weak links in the supply chain

FACT complements efforts aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and integration. This includes the policy commitment of the European Union under the Cotonou Agreement to facilitate the integration of Pacific ACP countries into regional and global economies.
