Climate Change

Small islands, whether located in the tropics or higher latitudes, have characteristics which make them especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, sea-level rise, and extreme events (very high confidence) ♦  Sea-level rise is expected to exacerbate inundation, storm surge, erosion and other coastal hazards, thus threatening vital infrastructure, settlements and facilities that support the livelihood of island communities (very high confidence). ♦  There is strong evidence that under most climate change scenarios, water resources in small islands are likely to be seriously compromised (very high confidence). ♦  It is very likely that subsistence and commercial agriculture on small islands will be adversely affected by climate change (high confidence). This first Vanuatu workshop for curriculum writers from Kindergarten to Year 6 on climate change education was organized by the Curriculum Development Unit, Department of Education with support from SPC/GIZ Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region (CCCPIR) and held on Nov 14-15 2011 in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Vanuatu government departments provided their key learning messages on climate change and disasters and presented expected impacts and responses to climate change in Vanuatu. Curriculum writers discussed major concepts and did first steps in sequencing CC.

This booklet for children explains how climate change will affect our crop production. It describes some methods and technologies to help cope with these changes.

The first Pou and Miri booklet was “Pou and Miri learn about tackling climate change”. The Pou and Miri series target young Pacific readers and aim to educate them on issues relating to climate change.
